Highlands Art League Accepting Applications for Artist in Residence Program

SEBRING, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2017) – The Highlands Art League (HAL) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for its Artist in Residence (AiR) Program, which provides visual or literary artists dedicated time, space and support to experiment and develop a new body of work in a creative community at HAL’s ‘Village Where Art Lives.’  The ideal candidates for this program are progressive artists who are self-directed, motivated, community-oriented and passionate about creating new work. 
The program encourages career artists who embrace community and enjoy working in a team environment to apply.  AiR artists will receive dedicated studio and living space in HAL’s Clovelly House complete with climate control and studio space in exchange for part-time work at the Village Where Art Lives.  The length of the residency is mutually agreed upon by HAL and the artist.  The residency can begin as early as Jan. 5, 2018. 
Program benefits include:
  • Exhibition Opportunities – Exhibition space in one of HAL’s buildings will be available during the residency.
  • Gain Valuable Teaching Experience – Paid teaching opportunities are available for children/adult classes.
  • Professional Development – AiR participants are encouraged to interact with and observe HAL artists, students and speakers.  
The Artist in Residency will live in HAL’s Clovelly House, a 1925 historic house featuring 2,252 square feet that has been completely renovated, thanks to generous funding by the Sebring CRA and Mrs. Joan Hartt.  The house features hardwood floors, a full kitchen, sunroom and back porch overlooking beautiful Lake Jackson.  The house is one of four buildings that comprise the ‘Village Where Art Lives’ located inside Sebring’s Cultural Center on the shores of Lake Jackson.  The artist’s living space will be located in the back of the house and will include a private, furnished bedroom, bathroom, living area and kitchen complete with climate control, security system and Internet access.  The front of the house will be utilized for exhibit space, work space and classes.  
“The AiR Program is uniquely dedicated to providing a venue for talented artists from outside our region to integrate with, and become members of, our local community,” said HAL President Barb Hall.  “During their stay, our Artist in Residence will provide community members and visitors with a fresh perspective on arts education in Highlands County.”  
HAL’s first Artist in Residence, Kathryn Obidzinski, recently accepted a position as curator for the Highlands Museum of the Arts (MoTA).

Find Your Inner Pastry Chef at the 5th Annual Cookiefest

 SEBRING, Fla. (Nov. 22, 2017) – The Highlands Art League is pleased to host the 5th Annual Cookiefest on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at its Visual Art Center (behind the Yellow House) located on the shores of Lake Jackson in Downtown Sebring’s Allen Altvater Cultural Center. 
Kids of all ages can find their inner pastry chef and artist at Cookiefest where they can decorate cookies and cupcakes with local chefs, as well as create holiday art with local artists. New this year will be a holiday backdrop for family photos.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to write letters to Santa.  No registration is required.  Admission is free thanks to the sponsorships The Palms of Sebring and Visit Sebring.

Help Welcome FOX 13’s Good Day Tampa Bay on Nov. 17
 The Highlands County Tourist Development Council (TDC) is pleased to announce that FOX 13’s Good Day Tampa Bay will be airing live from Downtown Sebring on Friday, Nov. 17, 5 – 10 AM. The special show will be a part of the channel’s showcase of how local Tampa area communities, such as Highlands County, are recovering from Hurricane Irma in their series “Irma’s Lingering Impacts.”
Good Day Anchor Jennifer Epstein will be LIVE from Circle Park, and Feature Reporter Charley Belcher will be at Dee’s Place restaurant. Several interviews with local leaders are scheduled including Highlands County Board of County Commission Chairman Don Elwell and Sebring Mayor John Shoop, as well as several others. Highlands County residents are encouraged to attend the live broadcast and help share stories of community strength and recovery before, during and after Irma.

As debris contractors plan on having the county cleared by December 15th, it is requested that all residents have their Hurricane Irma debris out by November 13th so contractors can make their final assessments on each roadway and plan accordingly. 51st Annual Highlands Fine Arts & Crafts Festival Judge Announced

SEBRING, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2017) – The Highlands Art League (HAL), hosts of the 51st Annual Highlands Fine Arts & Crafts Festival presented by Duke Energy is pleased to announce that this year’s Festival judge, Lynn Foskett of Tarpon Springs.

Lynn Foskett was born in 1949, in south Florida. Raised and educated in the South, Mid-West and Northeast, Foskett received a strong background in the visual arts in junior college. After studying abroad, she assisted regionally acclaimed artist, Augusta Oelschig (known for her work in the distinctive Southern Gothic tradition) on a commissioned piece now displayed in the Savannah Chamber of Commerce. Foskett went on to complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Northern Illinois University.

After she and her husband raised their family in Minnesota, they moved to the Tampa Bay Area in 1999, where Foskett has been active in the arts community. She has been a volunteer docent at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art (LRMA), also serving on the LRMA board and as Board Chairman. Foskett served several years on the Tarpon Springs Public Art Committee where she recently completed her term as its Chair.

Over the years, she has served as a judge of a variety of local art organizations shows as well as the Palm Harbor Fine Arts and Crafts Festival. Foskett is a participating member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists (PAVA) and of the Florida Artists Group (FLAG). Her work has recently been in area group shows, including the Morean Arts Center and with an award winning entry in the Art Center Sarasota’s juried “Florida’s Finest,” Foskett is currently preparing for a solo show at the Pasco Fine Arts Center in New Port Richey, FL to be held in January of 2018.

The Festival will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. with judging taking place Saturday morning for all registered artists who will be competing for more than $3,000 in cash awards, as well as the new Emerging Artists who are competing for a total of $2,000 in scholarships. The purpose of the Festival is to foster an appreciation of the arts, celebrate original art and value community by bringing art and culture to Highlands County.

This Festival is one of Florida’s longest continuously running art Festivals. It the largest and most prestigious in the South Central Florida region held in historic downtown Sebring the first Saturday in November to kick off the holiday shopping season. For 50 years, this festival has provided a celebration of the arts in the local and regional community. It features more than 80 talented local, state and national visual artists. Their original artwork from 10 mediums reflects the very best, having been juried from 100+ applicants.

In addition to great art, the Festival will include the (Chamber of) Commerce Avenue for area businesses that do not sell art or food, Children’s Street with interactive arts and crafts activities for kids, live music, strolling street theatre, and culinary offerings provided by various food vendors on Culinary Street.

Downtown’s September features include the month-long Mannequin Challenge, the Tour of Sebring Bicycling Event from September 2-4, Paisley Craze: The Ultimate 60’s Party Band, September 1st at The Circle Theatre and the 8th Annual Sebring Thunder – Sebring’s premier car show – from September 15-17. 

Make a new friend and pose with one of the mannequins decorated in the storefront windows of your favorite downtown merchant as part of The Mannequin Challenge. The windows of the Downtown businesses will showcase creatively decorated mannequins throughout the month of September making downtown a sight to see and share with the world. Participating businesses will have their displays uploaded to the official Downtown Sebring Facebook page for you to vote for your favorite. The photo with the most activity will be the winner!

Car enthusiasts will not want to miss the highly anticipated Sebring Thunder. Stroll through the car show, snap a selfie with your dream car and share the excitement with your friends on social media. Events in Downtown Sebring Every 1st Friday

SEBRING, FLA. (August 10, 2017) Thanks to Sun Events partnering with The Champion for Children’s Foundation of Highlands County you can expect an event every first Friday of the month at the Circle Theatre in downtown Sebring. Their 1st event in downtown was a live concert, Friday, August 4th with Dave Feder. This event was sold out in its entirety and gave the chance for local sensation, Caitlin Sinness to open up for Dave Feder.

Their next event takes place on September 1st, 2017 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at The Circle Theatre; 202 Circle Park Drive, featuring the ultimate party band, Paisley Craze! This band will be covering British and American bands from the 1960s including the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Supremes, Jimi Hendrix and much more.
